Penguin Library Centers

Hi friends!

This week our library centers will be all about penguins! (I like to study winter animals, even though our temperature here in Texas will be in the seventies this week.)

Penguin Bookmarks

I’ve got paper, pencils, and crayons out at a table so students can draw their own penguins on a bookmark. I printed drawing instructions from NothingButPenguins.com.

Penguin Origami

I cut printer paper into 8 1/2 by 8 1/2 squares (using the pieces I cut off as blank bookmarks). I printed these penguin origami instructions from Origami with Rachel Katz.

Penguin Measurement

This great idea came from Carolyn Vibbert at Risking Failure. She has a product on TPT called Measuring and Research Station: Emperor Penguin. I’m using a rolling dry erase board as both my measuring place and the space for students to record their observations with tally marks. Will more of my students be taller or shorter than an emperor penguin?

If I didn’t have this white board, I’d use a wall as a place to measure student height against penguin height.

Penguin Books

Of course I’ve got non-fiction penguin books out on a table, for student browsing and check-out.

Penguin Web Cam

On the big presentation screen, I’ll have the penguin webcam from the Monterey Bay Aquarium showing. These webcams are very engaging for our students!

Check out my posts on Twitter and Instagram (@MySchoolLibrary) this week, and you’ll see these learning centers in action!

    1. Penguin Centers are perfect for January. Thanks Cari. The webcam is great! How did you think of that?! I’m going to add a Question of the Week about Emperor Penguins as a center as well.
