Reading in the Wild Summer Book Club

Hi friends!

I really, really, really love the relaxed schedule of summer vacation! I’ve been staying up late to finish the books on my nightstand, sleeping in, and avoiding my phone alarm as much as possible. But…

I also like to use the extra time to move forward professionally, and I invite you to join my summer book club! I’ll be reading Reading in the Wild: The Book Whisperer’s Keys to Cultivating Lifelong Reading Habits, by Donalyn Miller.

Reading in the Wild Book Club

If you don’t already own this book, you can order it from my Amazon affiliate link by clicking here. I’ve already read it once, but I’d really like to dig in to it this summer, and come up with an action plan to implement in our school library. How can we, as librarians, develop lifelong readers?  I would LOVE for you to join me and share your great ideas. We are SO much better together!!

In this short video, author Donalyn Miller explains why she wrote this book.

Are you in?

Here’s our schedule, at a pace of one chapter per week. I’ll post discussion questions on each Monday, and I’ll set up a Padlet for each chapter where we can share our ideas.

  • Monday, June 27 Chapter 1: Wild Readers Dedicate Time to Read
  • Monday, July 4 Chapter 2: Wild Readers Self-Select Reading Material
  • Monday, July 11 Chapter 3: Wild Readers Share Books and Reading with Other Readers
  • Monday, July 18 Chapter 4: Wild Readers Have Reading Plans
  • Monday, July 25 Chapter 5: Wild Readers Show Preferences

Want to participate? No sign-ups are needed; just get your hands on the book and start reading. If you’ve already “liked” my Library Learners Facebook page, or followed me on Bloglovin, you’ll see the new posts pop up over the next several Mondays.

I’m leaving the classroom and moving into a school librarian position (PK-5th, 850 students) next year. I’m excited to learn and share ideas for implementing these strategies in the library. I’m in!

    4. I’m so excited! What a coincidence- I read this three years ago as a 4th grade reading teacher and LOVED it, and decided to pick it up again this summer (I’m going into my second year as an elementary librarian), just like you! I’m thrilled to have a place to share ideas! 🙂

    5. So excited to discover this website. I am a new librarian and purchased this book in May from our book fair. Reading and discussing with others is a huge bonus! “I can’t imagine a day without reading.” 🙂

    6. Can I get a copy of your book club questions? I am reading this with my coworkers and wanted some discussion questions. Thanks!
