Fun Facts Library Center
Hi friends!
Let’s talk about how and why you should set up a fun facts library center!
An Invitation to Research
As teacher librarians, we want our students to learn that when they have a question, they can find answers in reliable sources. One way we do this at our school is with our fun facts library center. Students can find a fun fact in a book or in one of our library resources (online databases). They write it on a form, and I give it to our assistant principal to read on the morning announcements.
A Habit of Source Citation
We also want students to cite their sources, right? We want that to be a habit, not something we talk about once a year during a big research project. At the fun facts center, I don’t accept any forms that don’t include a source citation (name of the book or website). Our Assistant Principal doesn’t read fun facts without source citations. So every Friday, when he reads fun facts on the morning announcements, our students are also hearing the sources cited. It’s a part of our regular school life, not a special occasion.
Fun
Our students LOVE hearing our Assistant Principal read fun facts on the announcements, and they love it even more when they hear their own names! They enjoy reading the fun facts books that I display at this library center. If the books are checked out, I can guide them to databases that are full of fun facts!
Try it!
Here’s the link to my super simple center sign and student forms. This link will require you to copy the Google Slides to make a set for yourself. I use this center off and on throughout the school year, because it works during any season. If you decide to try this at your school library, I’d love to hear how it worked for you! Let me know with a comment!
Hello, thanks for this. could you send/post a pic of the bulletin board in the background? It looks really cool!
I can’t make a copy of this. It says it’s not found. Can you please email it to me?
